Welcome to Somerset Prep North Lauderdale, “Home of the Hurricanes.” It is an absolute honor and privilege to be the principal of a school where the goal is for each child to develop to his/her full potential. Our theme this year is ‘’Mission I’m Possible: Staying Laser Focused’’.
In selecting a new theme each school year, our underlying goal remains the same: to achieve excellence in all areas of performance and competition. Having such a goal allows us to propel forward despite limitations set in our way. We understand that each child is different and therefore learns differently. To satisfy this need, our curriculum and classroom instruction is structured in such a way that our advanced students are rigorously challenged, our struggling students are receiving remedial support and those who are on grade level are receiving enrichment by maximizing the use of stimulating resources.
For the 2018-2019 school year, we encourage our students and faculty alike that “To succeed in your mission, you must have a single-minded devotion to your goal.” A.P. J. Abdul Kalam. For the 2017-2018 school year, both schools have maintained their grade of a “C”. Throughout the years that I have been the Principal of Somerset Prep North Lauderdale, we have continued to excel to greater heights and show vast improvements in every academic area. Our K-8 students’ performance was outstanding being only 2.6 points from obtaining a “B”, and our high school only 7.5 points from obtaining a “B” which shows exceptional increase from the previous year. In addition, another great accomplishment is our graduation rate was 97% with 71% of them having post-secondary education plans. I could not be more proud of these results. It indicates that all of your efforts are paying off. Let’s celebrate this achievement with triumph and expectancy! We are determined to accomplish our goal by attaining an “A”.
A commitment to excellence in our academic endeavors is not the sole reason we are an amazing school; it is our commitment to the development of the whole child, cognitively, physically and socially. With that being said, our students have the opportunity to participate in various clubs and sporting events throughout the year as well. It is amazing to see how our student athletes take the same determination from the courts which transcends to their academics. Determination is a key ingredient in achieving academic excellence.
Another important component required to achieve excellence, is parental involvement. We have seen a steady improvement in the willingness of parents and family members to get involved in various school activities at our campus, but there is still room for further improvement. Research shows that when parents are actively involved in their child’s education the following findings are evident:
1. Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates
2. Better school attendance
3. Increased motivation, better self-esteem
Parents, we are eager to see just how much we can achieve with your continued partnership this school year as we venture on our journey to academic excellence.
